Police: 12-year-old girl dies in Howard Co. after crashing car into tree

A 12-year-old girl was killed after the car she was driving veered off the road and slammed into a tree in Columbia, Maryland, early Sunday morning.

The man, age 36, in the car’s passenger seat was seriously injured, police say.

It happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday on Broken Land Parkway south of Cradlerock Way, near Lake Elkhorn, according to a statement from Howard County police.



Responders transported the passenger, who suffered from “serious injuries,” to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The road was closed between Cradlerock Way and Snowden River Parkway for around four hours while the crash was investigated.

Maryland’s first lady hikes with high schoolers, state officials for ‘Global Day of Unplugging’

In celebration of the "Global Day of Unplugging," which began March 1, Maryland's first lady Dawn Moore hiked with state officials and high schoolers, device-free, to encourage improved mental health. On Friday, Moore was joined by Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz, Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Laura Herrera Scott, mental health and environmental experts and several Howard County high school students, in Halethorpe's Patapsco Valley State Park.
