Catholic Charities food drive seeks to collect 100,000 pounds for holidays

The holidays can be an especially difficult time of year for families trying to keep food on the table, and a Virginia nonprofit is making sure residents know they don’t have to do it alone.

During the pandemic, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington became a crucial source of support for many and is now continuing to help address food insecurity with the Fall Harvest Food Drive.

The event will collect more than 100,000 pounds of food. Throughout November, there will be events across Virginia where meals will be provided.

“We’ve really seen an increased need for food, especially with rising food prices. We have over 20 food drives now scheduled for November,” said Christina Harrington, an administrator with the nonprofit.

Anyone in need is able to receive assistance through three Catholic Charities pantries, including Loaves and Fishes in Front Royal, Christ House in Alexandria and the Loudoun Regional Office in Sterling.

More than 80 parish, interfaith, community and government pantries within the diocese are participating in the food drive.

The diocese is still taking donations at the St. Lucy Food Project warehouse in Manassas 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Donations also are accepted online.

The goal, Harrington said, is to ease the burden many families will feel this holiday season.

Trump announces a $22.5B makeover of Dulles airport that will eliminate the ‘people movers’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a $22.5 billion renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport that will end the use of the widely disliked “people movers,” the mobile lounges that have been used for decades to shuttle travelers to and from the main terminal. In place of the people movers, the airport will add a new U-shaped passenger train, a central walking tunnel, more moving walkways and new concourses. An above-ground parking garage closer to the main terminal with space for 32,000 vehicles is also in the offing, according to Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The airport makeover would add to a long list of renovation projects the Republican president is pursuing to leave a lasting mark on the Washington region after his term ends in January 2029. Among other undertakings, he is building a new White House ballroom and wants to build a towering triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial. But of all the construction projects Trump is pursuing, the renovations at Dulles could prove to be his most popular and benefit the greatest number of people. The airport, the area’s primary international airport, served roughly 29 million passengers over the past year, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
