1 dead in crash that closes SB George Washington Parkway in McLean

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on the George Washington Parkway early Friday.

The crash investigation closed the southbound George Washington Parkway in McLean between the Capital Beltway and Va. 123/Chain Bridge Road for 6 1/2 hours.

The crash occurred near the CIA, with U.S. Park Police officers responding at 5:18 a.m. The parkway reopened just before noon.

The police said the driver was the only one in the vehicle. That person’s identity has not yet been released.

The closure of the parkway prompted authorities to advise drivers to take alternate routes.

Traffic was heavy on alternative routes, including the Clara Barton Parkway, throughout the morning.

Those railcars were pulled from service in October, when an investigation of a derailment uncovered a potentially dangerous defect that causes wheels on the cars to shift outward. Removing the cars cut Metro's train fleet by more than half and severely reduced service across the subway system.
