Boyds man, 23, shot to death near his home

Police identified the man shot to death Tuesday night in Maryland’s Montgomery County, but have not made any arrests in the death of Javon Jamal Gordon, 23, of Boyds.

Montgomery County police said Gordon “briefly interacted with the suspect(s), who were in a vehicle, before he was shot” in the 12900 block of Ethel Rose Way in Boyds before the suspects took off. Gordon lived on Ethel Rose Way.

According to a news release, the first report of the shooting came in at 6:52 p.m. Tuesday.

CPR was already underway when officers responded. They continued with CPR, but Gordon died at the scene.

The case is being investigated as a homicide.

Rockville Catholic school’s hairstyle policies face scrutiny for racial discrimination

A private school run by the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., in Rockville, Maryland, is facing scrutiny for policies in its student handbook banning braids, cornrows, twists or dreadlocks, rules which parents of Black children feel are discriminatory. In a letter to St. Jude Regional Catholic School, Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando said a constituent preparing to send her child to the school had reached out to say she was "extremely distressed" about the school's hairstyle policy.
