DC, Va. income tax deadlines extended

D.C. and Virginia are extending the deadline for their residents to file their income tax returns and pay their taxes to May 17.

DC extension

The Office of Tax Revenue said Friday that the extension applies to all D-20, D-30, D-40, Standalone Schedule H, D-41, D-40B, and D-65 tax filers, and includes combined return filers. This extension is automatic and does not require taxpayers to apply.

Taxpayers may continue to request an extension to file their income, partnership and franchise tax returns to Oct. 15 or Nov. 15 for combined return filers. This must be done by May 17

The deadlines to file Forms D-20ES, D-30ES, D-40ES and D-41ES and to make estimated tax payments remains unchanged. The first quarter payments are due April 15.

Virginia extension

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced the extension Friday.

The move from the previous deadline of May 1 brings Virginia in line with the federal tax deadline, which earlier this week was moved from April 1 to May 17.

“Aligning Virginia’s filing and payment deadline with the federal government will provide additional flexibility and simplify the process for taxpayers,” Northam said in a statement. “Even with this extended deadline, we encourage Virginians to file as soon as possible so we can get people the refunds they are entitled to while also protecting the Commonwealth’s strong fiscal footing.”

The Department of Taxation outlined in the statement the options Virginians have for filing and paying, and recommended electronic filing with direct deposit for any refunds.

Tax Commissioner Craig M. Burns added in the statement that COVID-19 protocols could mean it takes longer than usual to process paper returns.

The extension only applies to individual income taxes, the statement said; it doesn’t apply to estimated taxes.

At the moment, interest on unpaid taxes would still start accruing starting May 1, but the General Assembly will consider legislation to change that at next month’s reconvened session, Northam’s office said.

Trump announces a $22.5B makeover of Dulles airport that will eliminate the ‘people movers’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a $22.5 billion renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport that will end the use of the widely disliked “people movers,” the mobile lounges that have been used for decades to shuttle travelers to and from the main terminal. In place of the people movers, the airport will add a new U-shaped passenger train, a central walking tunnel, more moving walkways and new concourses. An above-ground parking garage closer to the main terminal with space for 32,000 vehicles is also in the offing, according to Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The airport makeover would add to a long list of renovation projects the Republican president is pursuing to leave a lasting mark on the Washington region after his term ends in January 2029. Among other undertakings, he is building a new White House ballroom and wants to build a towering triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial. But of all the construction projects Trump is pursuing, the renovations at Dulles could prove to be his most popular and benefit the greatest number of people. The airport, the area’s primary international airport, served roughly 29 million passengers over the past year, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
