Man dead, several injured after car crashes head-on into Metrobus

A Maryland man was killed and several other people were injured late Thursday after the car the man was driving crashed head-on into a Metrobus in Northeast D.C. The crash occurred just before midnight on Minnesota Avenue near Benning Road, D.C. police said. The Metrobus was making a left turn from Benning Road onto Minnesota, when a Nissan Altima traveling in the opposite direction swerved into the left lane and struck the bus head-on, D.C. police said in a news release Friday. The car was driven by Marion Dante Fields, 24, of Clinton, Maryland, according to police. D.C. Fire and EMS crews responded to the crash and rushed Fields to the hospital where he died. Two passengers in the Altima were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, police said. Multiple bus passengers were also taken to the hospital after the crash, although none of the injuries were life-threatening, D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo said early Friday morning. Three others had minor injuries. All lanes of traffic at the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road were reopened shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, according to the WTOP Traffic Center.
