Breezy, chilly Saturday follows Christmas Day flurries

Some parts of the D.C. region saw a flurry or flake or two on a bundle-up, bitter cold kind of Christmas Day. And Saturday follows much of the same. Here’s what you need to know. Snow showers Friday afternoon put down a coating of snow across parts of the D.C. area, Storm Team4 meteorologist Mike Stinneford said. In fact, a few areas even enjoyed some sunshine. A few light snow showers are flurries are possible before midnight, with some clearing in the early morning hours. Temperatures will be steady or falling throughout Christmas Day, going down well below freezing Friday night. It will stay breezy and cold through Saturday, but there will be a good deal of sunshine. It will stay cold, with temperatures struggling to get above freezing. Sunday will be a nicer day with a good deal of sunshine, lighter winds and warmer temperatures, with highs back in the 40s. The warming trend will continue on Monday, but there will be some cloud cover as the region’s next cold front approaches. Sunshine returns Tuesday, and it will be rather chilly.



Christmas Eve brought severe weather and heavy rainfall. By the early morning hours, temperatures plummeted “right on schedule,” said Storm Team 4 meteorologist Matt Ritter, which led to some icy patches in a number of northern and western suburbs. Many small streams and creeks, and smaller rivers, continue to have some flooding problems, Ritter said. The Potomac River could experience some minor flooding over the weekend.

Friday night — Becoming mostly clear. Blustery and cold. Lows: low to mid-20s. Wind chills in single digits and teens. Saturday — Mostly sunny. Brisk and cold. Highs: low to mid-30s. Sunday — Mostly sunny. More seasonably chilly. Highs: upper 30s to low 40s. Monday — Mostly cloudy. Milder. Highs: mid-40s to low 50s.

Showers, scattered thunderstorms expected Sunday night

The first group of thunderstorms from earlier today that weakened into a line of showers as it moved through our area is all but finished. Storm Team4 meteorologist Matthew Ritter said a few showers will move through the far southwest suburbs and north central Virginia early Sunday evening. A few scattered stronger thunderstorms coming from western Maryland and western Pennsylvania could move back into the area through mid-evening.
