Car Review: Maserati Quattroporte GTS GranSport is a luxury sedan with the heart of a Ferrari

9 OF 9

Need a luxury sedan that can double as a serious sporting machine? Get excited. Maserati has a car for you.

The Quattroporte GTS GranSport coddles you with a leather-lined interior with top notch fit and finish. This Maserati also packs a mighty punch from a twin turbo V8 sourced from Ferrari.

With 523HP, this luxury sedan really moves and it sounds great when you’re on the gas. Plan on using a bunch. I had a big problem getting good MPG as I averaged about 13.3mpg for my week of driving.

Don’t blame the car — rather this driver who had to hear that V8 sing often. While this can be a savage sporting machine with high handling limits, it’s surprising just how well this large sedan handles.

It’s a joy on back roads and it seems to drive smaller than it is. The humongous brakes stop the car with authority. This sportier version of the Quattroporte doesn’t beat you up either when you want a luxury sedan.

Compared to other luxury sedans, the ride feels firm with the large, expensive 21-inch wheels. The cabin was hushed on the highway and the deeply-sculpted sport seats are very comfortable, even on longer rides.

Cost: $138,900; as tested $150,410 (2019). 2020 models have a price cut, saving you nearly $13,000.

MPG: 15mpg city, 22mpg highway; I managed 13.3mpg in 209 miles of mixed driving.

Safety: Drivers assistance pack, front and rear park assist, active blind zone alert, lane keeping assist, highway assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-go.

Options: $1,490 carbon macrotwill trim; $1,790 Pieno Fiore natural leather; $90 heated black leather steering wheel ; $2,190 Matte red anodized brake calipers; $3,000 21-inch forged Atlante dark wheels; $590 drivers assistance pack; $1,990 Bowers & Wilkins sound system

Things to know: Want to stand out in the luxury sedan market? The Maserati Quattroporte GTS GranSport is your ride. With powerful turbo V8 power and high handling limits, it’s the perfect mix of luxury and sport.

Pros:

  • Turbo V8 from Ferrari is a gem
  • Large, comfortable cabin with high end finishes
  • Handles and accelerates like a sports car

Cons:

  • Lacks good fuel economy
  • The ride is more firm than other luxury sedans
  • Pricey in top level GTS GranSport trim level

Car Review: You can plug-in for better mpg with BMW’s new version of the X3

Compact luxury crossovers are big business as buyer's trade in luxury sedans for the popular high riders. BMW redesigned its X3 a couple years ago to better compete in a more crowded marketplace. I drove the sporty X3 M40i in 2019 and was impressed with its potent performance. New for 2020 is a plug-in hybrid version that allows for 18-20 miles of electric-only driving. But when you combine the gas engine and that electric motor, the xDrive30e is transformed into a fun performance ride.
