Conveyor-belt sushi restaurant chain — with robot chefs — rolling into DC

The self-proclaimed “pioneer” of the revolving sushi restaurant is taking D.C. for a spin.

Kura Sushi, a Japan-based restaurant chain with a growing presence in the U.S. through its Irvine, California-based Kura Sushi USA Inc. (NASDAQ: KRUS) subsidiary, is slated to open its first D.C. outpost at Gallery Place.

Twice in recent months, in presentations to investors, Kura Sushi USA has said it executed a lease for the District, but it has yet to say where. The location, according to an ad for a restaurant manager posted on the Kura Sushi website and other job recruiting sites, is 614 H St. NW. It is unclear exactly which Gallery Place space it will fill — a number of stores have that address — though the BB&T branch there, which fronts H Street, did recently close.

Kura Sushi USA representatives did not return requests for comment. Representatives of Gallery Place owner Oxford Properties were not immediately available for comment.

Sonic Drive-In to open its first restaurant in Northern Virginia’s I-95 corridor

Fast-food chain Sonic Drive-In has filed plans to build a new restaurant in Prince William County, its first outpost along the Interstate 95 corridor in Northern Virginia. The 1,400-square-foot restaurant, with two drive-thru lanes, 12 pull-up ordering stalls and a dining patio, will be located at 4115 Talon Drive in Dumfries, part of the Barracks Row at Quantico commercial development less than a mile northwest of the I-95 interchange at state Route 234. The location “will constitute a flagship Sonic design that will serve as a benchmark for future restaurant drive-thru development,” according to a written narrative accompanying the application, filed by Noah Klein of Venable LLP.
