The 2-year-old boy who survived a fall from an 11th-floor window at a Takoma Park, Maryland, apartment building Monday had just woken up from an afternoon nap, clambered on top of a night stand near an open window and pushed on the screen before tumbling out. Takoma Park police said Tuesday morning they investigated the fall and have have ruled it an accident. The boy remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Children’s National Hospital in D.C. The toddler landed in a pile of mulch and some bushes — missing hard concrete by just inches, police said. The boy’s family said doctors are “surprised that the injuries to the child are not as severe” as to be expected from such a high fall, Ron Hardy, acting spokesman of the police department, said in a statement. The fall happened at the Park Ritchie apartments at 7600 Maple Avenue just after 4:15 p.m.
