Virginia adds, Maryland loses jobs

WASHINGTON — Unemployment rates were stable in 38 states in June, including Maryland and Virginia, though Maryland lost jobs while Virginia gained.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reports Maryland’s unemployment rate in June was 4.3 percent, unchanged from May, but slightly higher than a year ago, when Maryland’s unemployment rate was 4.1 percent.

Virginia’s June jobless rate was 3.2 percent, unchanged from May, and lower than 3.7 percent in June of 2017.

Maryland lost a net 5,500 jobs in June and ended the month with a total of 2.73 million jobs.

Virginia gained ended June with 1,300 more jobs than in May for a total of just over 4 million jobs.

Hawaii continues to claim the lowest state unemployment rate, at just 2.1 percent in June. Alaska had the highest state unemployment rate at 7.1 percent.
