WASHINGTON — A Laurel, Maryland, man is facing charges after he was accused of disemboweling his family’s dog, among other offenses.

The Howard County police said in a statement Friday that Omar Beniah-Jovan Gertman, 24, was indicted July 11 on charges of felony animal cruelty, second-degree assault and malicious destruction of property.

The incident happened June 12, at a home on Covered Wagon Drive; a woman reported that someone in their family had stabbed and disemboweled the dog — a Yorkshire terrier named Boo — and fled.

Boo was not expected to survive, the police said, but has recovered after being taken to an emergency animal hospital.

Gertman is also accused of assaulting an acquaintance and destroying a TV and coffee maker, among other items. He was found at a later date and is being held without bond.
