WASHINGTON — A 72-year-old woman was assaulted by people in a St. Mary’s County, Maryland, neighborhood, after her SUV struck a child who ran into the street, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on Wednesday around 3 p.m. St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the 46000 block of Yorktown Road in Lexington Park for a report of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

They found a 2003 GMC Envoy in the roadway. The driver was 72-year-old Linda Glaser.

She was traveling south on Yorktown Road and an ice cream truck was stopped on the opposite side of the road. As Glaser passed the truck, a 10-year-old child ran into the roadway from behind the ice cream truck, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was struck and has incapacitating injuries, a news release said.

After the crash, Glaser was assaulted by one or more people in the neighborhood. She sustained incapacitating injuries. Glaser and the child were taken to hospitals.
