Charles Co. sheriff releases new sketch 20 years after woman’s body found in field

WASHINGTON — A woman found dead 20 years ago this week is still unidentified, and Maryland investigators are hoping someone will recognize a new sketch of the victim.

Charles County Sheriff’s Department investigators found the woman’s decomposing body in an overgrown Bel Alton, Maryland, field in 1998 and determined she had been killed.

Investigators found that the victim was not carrying identification, and without any matching fingerprints on file, the case went cold. They describe the victim as a black woman with a light complexion who stood between 5 feet, 4 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches tall who was in her late 20s or early 30s when she died in 1998.

Authorities released a black-and-white sketch in 2005. But now, Charles County sheriff’s forensics have created a color version with slightly modified features, including a change to the woman’s hairstyle, which they hope will generate tips.

There is a $10,000 reward for a tip that leads to a conviction of her killer. Anyone with information about an unsolved crime or the location of a fugitive can contact Charles County Crime Solvers online or by calling 1-866-411-TIPS. Those who provide tips through Crime Solvers will remain anonymous.
