WASHINGTON — A 15-year-old Prince William County teen died and four others were hospitalized in a Friday crash on Furnace Road in Lorton, Virginia.

The 15-year-old passenger was riding in a car driven by an unlicensed 14-year-old at the time of the crash, a Fairfax County Police Department statement said.

Fairfax County police initially said the 14-year-old driver was killed, but corrected its statement on Saturday to clarify that the 15-year-old was killed.

The driver and one of the 15-year-old passengers were treated and released from the hospital Saturday. Two other 15-year-old passengers remain in the hospital. All four were treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Officers responded at about 11:24 a.m. Friday to reports of a single-car crash on Furnace Road near Lorton Road and Dairy Road, police said.

The 14-year-old was driving a Nissan Maxima southbound on Furnace Road when it left the roadway, struck a tree and flipped, police said.

The four surviving victims were taken to the hospital by both helicopter and ambulance.

Detectives concluded that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but still are investigating whether speed was a cause.

“Once the investigation is complete, the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office will be consulted for any potential charges,” the statement said.

The teens have been identified, but state law prohibits releasing the names of minors.
