Chef Mike Cordero expands sports bar empire with Rockwood in Gainesville

WASHINGTON — Veteran Northern Virginia chef Mike Cordero opened the newest addition to his stable of D.C. area sports bars with Rockwood Sports Bar in Gainesville, Virginia, on Thursday.

Rockwood Sports Bar is at 7505 Iron Bar Lane in the Virginia Gateway shopping center.

It occupies almost 5,000 square feet in a former Ruby Tuesday restaurant space in Virginia Gateway’s Atlas Walk area. Cordero’s MACNAC Hospitality is leasing the space from Peterson Companies.

Rockwood Sports Bar is Cordero’s eighth Northern Virginia establishment, most of which are in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.

In December, Cordero opened the G.O.A.T., a 10,000-square-foot, two level sports bar with more than 50 HD televisions in a former Hard Times Cafe space in Clarendon.

His other restaurants include A-Town Bar Grill, Barley Mac, Bronx Pizza and Subs, and Don Tito, all in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, plus Don Taco in Alexandria and Primetime Sports Bar and Grill in Fairfax.

Rockwood Sports Bar seats 200 between three full bars, 50 bar stools, 45 indoor tables and 20 outdoor tables.

It has two large patios, one with a better garden theme.

The American-themed menu includes wings, fried chicken, pork belly Cuban sandwiches and bacon-chicken fritters with chipotle radish sauce, plus a red velvet milkshake.

Cordero, a Bronx native, also has his own wine label, Cordero Wines, and his own line of hot sauces, Bronx Tale.

Should you buy a house with cash?

High mortgage interest rates may have you exploring alternative ways of buying your home that don't require a loan. And while the competition for a new home may not be what it was in 2021, for the right home you may still need to work to get a leg up on the competition. If you have the means, an all-cash offer is a great way to fast-track a deal and avoid the additional costs that come with a mortgage. A seller is more likely to accept your offer, and the success of the deal isn't reliant on a lender's OK following an appraisal. You'll also own the home outright after the transaction with no mortgage to pay each month.
