WASHINGTON — A school resource officer who police said accidentally fired his service weapon inside an Alexandria, Virginia, middle school in March has been indicted by a grand jury on two misdemeanor charges.

Carl Savoy, 27, who has been employed by the Alexandria Police Department for five years, was indicted Monday on charges of reckless handling of a firearm and destruction of property.

Alexandria police said Savoy accidentally fired his gun inside George Washington Middle School on March 13. No one was injured in the shooting.

The maximum penalty on each count is 12 months in jail and/or a $2,500 fine.

No trial date has been set.

Savoy turned himself in to police Monday afternoon and has been released on his own recognizance.

Savoy is on administrative leave without pay from the department as a result of the charges.
