WASHINGTON — Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Monday night on Twitter that she is a new mother to an adopted child. She wrote, “So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom!”

It is with great joy and excitement that I share with you that late last year, I decided to begin the adoption journey. I was not sure how long it would take, and to my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected. So today, I am proud to announce that I am a mom! pic.twitter.com/q9qoz587IL

In the attached news release, Bowser said she was “thrilled, nervous and looking forward to each and every stage. I will be taking the next week or so to enjoy these precious moments with my new baby.” She asked that she be allowed some private time with her new child and suggested that her “great team” will keep the mayor’s office from “missing a beat.” Bowser says she started the adoption process late in 2017 and was not sure how long it would take. She wrote, “To my delight, it advanced much sooner than I expected.” Bowser is the second woman to lead the District and took office in January 2015. Before becoming mayor, she was a Ward 4 councilwoman starting with a special election in 2007.
