WASHINGTON — George Washington University’s former chief of police has been picked to be Charlottesville’s new chief.

The City Council is set to vote on RaShall M. Brackney, an Arlington resident, during its meeting on Monday. If the appointment is approved, she’ll start on June 18.

A retired 30-year-veteran of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Brackney holds a Ph.D. from Robert Morris University. Career achievements include the 2011 Otto Davis Award for Social & Racial Justice from Carnegie Mellon University and the 2013 Community Police Officer of the Year Award from the Alliance for Police Accountability.

“During her time in Pittsburgh, she was deeply committed to building strong relationships between the residents and the police officers who serve and protect them,” City Manager Maurice Jones said in a statement Tuesday. “Chief Brackney is very mindful of the expectations of modern police departments.”

Brackney is the first permanent successor to Al Thomas, who retired after a report critical of how officials handled August’s white nationalist rally that left three dead and dozens injured.
