WASHINGTON — Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland confirmed Cpl. Kevin L. Brooks, a 12-year veteran of the department, died after experiencing a medical emergency that led to a car crash on Interstate 395 in Fairfax County, Virginia that complicated Tuesday’s afternoon commute.

Brooks was off duty at the time of the crash.

Virginia State Police are in charge of investigating the crash.

The crash happened on Interstate 395 just north of the Capital Beltway around 2:23 p.m., Virginia State Police said in a news release.

Brooks was traveling south on I-395 when he experienced a medical emergency. His car struck another vehicle traveling southbound, then ran off the road, struck the Jersey wall and then hit another vehicle.

Virginia State Police said a passing citizen performed CPR on Brooks, but Brooks died after being taken to a hospital.

None of the other drivers was hurt in the crash.

The crash on the right side of the main line of I-395 complicated the commute into the 4 p.m. Delays occurred on both the main line and the High Occupancy Lanes through the afternoon hours.

The Prince George’s County Police Department said that Brooks spent his entire career on the force serving out of District IV in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

It is with deep sadness that I inform all of you of the death of Corporal Kevin L. Brooks Sr. #3018. Corporal Brooks was off duty and had a medical emergency which led to a motor vehicle accident. Kevin was a 12 year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department assigned to District IV; where he spent his whole career. Please keep the Brooks family in your thoughts and prayers.
