WASHINGTON — A Virginia woman was arrested at Richmond International Airport on Monday after security screeners found a loaded pink handgun in her carry-on bag.

Transportation Security Administration officers alerted airport police, who arrested the woman on weapons charges, a TSA spokesperson said. The 9 mm, which was loaded with eight pink-tipped bullets, was confiscated.

The woman was bound for New York’s Kennedy International Airport.

TSA officials remind the public that weapons brought to checkpoints are subject to fines of up to $13,000, regardless of whether the owner has a concealed-carry permit. (See a complete list of TSA fines here.)

While passengers are allowed to travel with guns, they should be declared and should be packed in a locked hard-side case, unloaded, in checked baggage, separate from ammunition. (See the complete guidelines for traveling with firearms on TSA’s website.)

Travelers should also check with their airline about any additional firearm/ammunition policies, and be aware of the firearms laws for where they’re traveling, TSA said.
