BALTIMORE (AP) — The governor of Maryland has appointed a former delegate to the vacant Baltimore state Senate seat that was surrendered by a former senator.

The Baltimore Sun reports Jill Carter was appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan on Monday to serve in the seat once held by former Senator Nathaniel Oaks after he resigned as part of a guilty plea in a federal corruption and bribery case.

Carter will serve out the remaining seven months of the term. She’s also running to win the District 41 seat on a permanent basis and faces educator J.D. Merrill in the June 26 Democratic primary election.

Carter was a delegate for 14 years before resigning to join Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh’s administration last year in a role designated to enforce the city’s civil rights laws and oversee investigations of police brutality complaints.
