Zipcar drops one-way rentals in DC region

WASHINGTON — Carsharing service Zipcar has quietly dropped its one-way rentals in the D.C. market, less than two years after launching the option.

The Car2Go model of picking up a car in one location and leaving it in another differed in that Zipcar required one-way rentals to be dropped off at specific Zipcar spots. Car2Go members can drop off a car in any legal street parking spot.

Not all Zipcar vehicles were available for one-way rental. Those that were, were located throughout downtown, Georgetown, Anacostia, Bethesda, Arlington and other Metro stations.

Zipcar did not specifically say why it was dropping one-way rentals in Washington, other than it is constantly testing new models.

“We are actively testing products that provide more flexibility to meet more member use cases in key cities. In the interim, Zipcar has indefinitely suspended its one-way beta test in Washington D.C. as we work to improve our comprehensive mobility service,” Zipcar said in an emailed statement to WTOP.

The one-way rental option currently remains available for Zipcar members only in the Boston market.

Should you buy a house with cash?

High mortgage interest rates may have you exploring alternative ways of buying your home that don't require a loan. And while the competition for a new home may not be what it was in 2021, for the right home you may still need to work to get a leg up on the competition. If you have the means, an all-cash offer is a great way to fast-track a deal and avoid the additional costs that come with a mortgage. A seller is more likely to accept your offer, and the success of the deal isn't reliant on a lender's OK following an appraisal. You'll also own the home outright after the transaction with no mortgage to pay each month.
