Man with pants unzipped arrested for attempted rape in Silver Spring apt. lobby

WASHINGTON — Montgomery County police arrested a man Thursday in Silver Spring, Maryland, for attempted rape. And when they nabbed him, they caught him with his pants unzipped.

Nahom Mamo, 19, is charged with sexual assault and attempted second-degree rape.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. in an apartment building in the 8700 block of Colesville Road.

Police said Mamo began speaking with the 17-year-old victim as she walked by him in the building’s lobby. He then grabbed her wrists and sexually assaulted her.

She eventually broke free, fled the building and called 911.

When officers responded to her call, they found Mamo exiting the building with his pants unzipped.

The victim identified him as her assaulter.

During an interview with police, Mamo admitted to grabbing her and said he wanted to have sex with her.

Mamo’s bond review will occur in District Court later Friday.
