WASHINGTON — The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is calling for the public’s help naming their 1,000 African penguin chick.

The zoo threw a gender reveal celebration on Friday, March 31, where it was announced the chick is a girl. She hatched sometime in the middle of February this year.

Zoo staff have selected four options and given explanations for each one:

• Millie (based on the number 1,000 — short for millennium)
• Kay (based on the number 1,000 — Kay as in K, short for kiloyears)
• Mango (following the tree theme that other chicks’ names follow)
• Amanzi (the Zulu word for water)

Those who hope to participate can vote for her name on the zoo’s website.

The chick marks the first time any zoo or aquarium in North America has hatched 1,000 African penguin chicks.
