WASHINGTON — Prince William Forest Park still has a long way to go until it’s fully restored from the March 2 windstorm damage that knocked down thousands of trees and power lines, but park goers can rejoice: Some areas of the park will reopen Monday.

[related_gallery align=”right”]In a news release Sunday, the National Park Service said the areas that have been cleared of the fallen or hazardous trees will reopen Monday at 9 a.m.

Visitors can enter from Park Entrance Road off Joplin Road. The visitor center will also be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The following areas of the park will be open:

• Piedmont Forest Trail
• Laurel Trail Loop
• Birch Bluff Trail
• Crossings Trail
• Pine Grove Picnic Area
• Telegraph Picnic Area
• Cabin camps (permit-holders only)

The majority of roads, trails and campgrounds are still closed because of safety concerns, said the release, including Scenic Drive and all campgrounds (except for the RV Campground).

Visitors are encouraged to discuss hiking plans with park rangers at the visitor center and should be cautious while hiking.

Park administrators will open other parts of the park as they are cleared of danger.

Workers from 15 other national parks helped to clear the park of trees, repair power lines and assess damage to buildings throughout the park.
