WASHINGTON — Phone scammers are working the D.C. area yet again. This time they’re telling would-be victims that they’re with Maryland’s Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Apparently, the scam involves scaring people into paying them money via wire transaction or with gift cards.

“Do not engage these individuals over the phone because they are attempting to obtain your personal information for their financial gain,” said a sheriff’s office statement.

If you receive such a call, authorities ask that you contact Prince George’s County police at 301-772-4420 to file a report.

Sheriff’s officials also remind area residents that not only do they not make phone calls on behalf of the courts regarding jury duty, but also they don’t ask for money.
