WASHINGTON — Two people were injured after giant trees fell into their bedrooms in Virginia and Maryland due to the high winds.

A 100-year-old woman sustained serious injuries when a giant tree sliced through her Kensington, Maryland, home and trapped her in her bedroom.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said when firefighters responded to the home in the 9900 block of East Bexhill Drive, they rescued two people, one of whom was the 100-year-old woman.

Firefighters responded shortly after 1 a.m.

She was trapped under a “significant amount of debris” in the one-story single-family house, Piringer told WTOP.

The woman was the only person taken to the hospital.

“The house is unsafe to occupy,” Piringer said.

In Falls Church, Virginia, a similar incident occurred, where one individual was trapped in their bed after a tree fell into their house around 4 a.m. Friday morning.

Authorities found the victim underneath the tree upon arrival. It took 30 minutes to remove and stabilize the tree, according to Willie Bailey, battalion chief of the Fairfax County Fire Department.

The victim was taken to Fairfax Hospital with minor injuries and was released soon after.

“We also had to bring in the building inspector … to make sure the building was still livable,” Bailey said. “That was approximately $80,000 in damage.”
