ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — President Donald Trump has nominated a 40-year-old Roanoke-based lawyer to become U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia.

The Roanoke Times reported Friday that Thomas Cullen is a former federal prosecutor. He currently works on criminal matters, internal investigations and complex civil litigation for the Woods Rogers law firm.

Cullen has the support of both of the state’s Democratic U.S. Senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Legal experts say the U.S. Senate will likely act on the nomination in the next several months.

Cullen received a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in South Carolina and a law degree from William & Mary. His father, Richard Cullen, was U.S. attorney for Virginia’s Eastern District in the early 1990s and was Virginia Attorney General for seven months in 1997 and 1998.
