LEESBURG, Va. — The Leesburg Town Council passed a resolution Tuesday night vowing to aggressively seek legal action against any hate group that acts in Leesburg outside the law.

Twice in the past four weeks, neighborhoods in the historic town in Loudoun County were pepper with KKK recruitment flyers.

“It needs to stop. The police force needs to get involved, the town council, the town manager,” said Tammy Carter, a teacher and resident of Leesburg, whose demand for police action seems to reflect the sentiment of the town’s African American community.

“This weekend, my neighborhood was one of the neighborhoods that got targeted … to me personally, it’s a hate thing, I believe that the KKK activity is my ISIS,” said Al Barney, one of Leesburg’s most prominent African American business executives.

Police said their investigation into the KKK flyers is ongoing. All the flyers were contained in plastic bags that also included birdseed.

Police said no one individual was targeted by the flyers and the action may not be illegal.

However police, backed by the FBI, said they are keeping an eye on the situation and don’t want it to escalate to a point where any community member is threatened or harmed.

“Here in Leesburg, we feel very strongly that our community is a diverse community filled with lots of different people, lots of different cultures and they make us stronger and better,” said Mayor Kelly Burk.
