WASHINGTON — A 16-year-old Prince George’s County high school student was stabbed several times in a gang-related assault near the school Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday afternoon, police responded to Parkdale High School in Riverdale, Maryland, after they received information that a group was forming off school property in the 6000 block of Good Luck Road near the edge of Greenbelt Park. When police arrived, they saw the 16-year-old victim “staggering out of [the] woods,” police said on Twitter.

Police say the male victim was stabbed multiple times and was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

“I will say that between the info we received from the school and our response, we believe we were able to prevent this from becoming worse and prevent further violence from occurring,” Stawinski said.

Police took more than half a dozen males into custody on the scene for questioning. Police said they believe the suspects in the case are gang affiliated.

It is not yet clear exactly how many people were taken into custody.

“We’re not even an hour and a half into this yet,” Stawinski said. “My detectives, who would know, can’t confirm any of that yet. When I know, the public will know.”

A spokesman for Prince George’s County Public Schools confirmed Parkdale High School was on lockdown for a little less than two hours as police investigated the incident.

Stawinksi stressed that no one inside the school was in any danger.

“Everything happened off of school property,” he said. “So it’s business as usual at Parkdale High School.”
