WASHINGTON — Four men were rescued from a pond after falling through ice in a Hyattsville, Maryland, park Sunday.

Three men fell through the ice at Glenridge Pond in the Glenridge Community Park just after 3:30 p.m.

“The lake is very deep and so the victims were not able to stand,” said Cpl. Tyler Hunter, a spokesman for Prince George’s County Police. “It was very obvious that they were in definite need of help. They were going below the surface of the water and were having issues staying afloat.”

Hunter said the three men were in the water for a couple of minutes before help arrived.

The responding officer, who was still training and had only worked with the department for 14 days, fell into the water trying to rescue the men.

Hunter said the field training officer rescued all four men.

No major injuries were reported.

All four men were taken to the hospital for hypothermia-related treatment.

“We are very thankful of our officer, who is still very new to the job, but very quickly recognize[ed] and jump[ed]in to try to save three people who were in obvious need of help,” Hunter said.
