WASHINGTON — Chelsea Manning, the transgender woman who was convicted of disclosing classified military information to WikiLeaks, has filed a statement to run for U.S. Senate in Maryland.
Manning filed her intent on Jan. 11, according to a statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Manning is running as a Democrat for the seat currently held by Sen. Ben Cardin.
Manning was convicted in 2013 and sentenced to 35 years in prison. Her sentence was commuted in 2017 by former president Barack Obama.
After her release, she moved to Maryland, which she calls her home state on her website.
