WASHINGTON — Residents of the District in Northeast woke up to a shock Friday — thousands there were without power for hours, Pepco said.

The outage struck the New Hampshire Ave. and South Dakota Ave. NE areas around 5:30 a.m.

It then spread to portions of North Michigan Park and University Heights neighborhoods.

More outages were reported in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Dominion Energy said equipment failure was responsible for the Fairfax outage.

Pepco said equipment failures were also to blame for failures in the District.

Power was restored to both areas around 7:30 a.m.
