WASHINGTON — Greenbelt City Council voted to lower the voting age for city elections from 18 years old to 16 years old on Monday.

The vote was unanimous among the four members present for the meeting.

The change is scheduled to take effect Feb. 27.

In August, the same proposed change went down to defeat before the council. But in November, Greenbelt residents approved a nonbinding referendum calling for the lower voting age.

Other places in Maryland where the voting age for municipal elections has been lowered to 16 years old include Hyattsville and Takoma Park.
