WASHINGTON — An 11-year-old girl was shot and killed inside her home in Prince George’s County, Maryland, just before Christmas, and police believe the shooting to be accidental.

The person who shot the girl was a family member who is also a minor, Prince George’s County police said, and there were adults in the home at the time.

The shooting happened around 9:55 p.m. Friday in the 15000 block of Saint Phillips Road in Aquasco. Officers found the girl suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted live-saving measures. But she died shortly after.

“Detectives will consult with the State’s Attorney’s Office regarding any potential criminal charges in this case,” police said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators are working to find out what led up to the girl’s death. No other details about the girl’s identity or the shooter’s age have been released.
