WASHINGTON — As short-term rentals continue to grow in popularity thanks in part to apps, such as Airbnb and FlipKey, Loudoun County has launched an effort to explore issues that could result from these kinds of rentals.

The effort will focus on researching four areas: registration, taxation, zoning and public safety.

Residents can submit their opinions in an online survey until Jan. 4.

The oversight will look at questions such as where the rentals should be, how often homes should be rented out and how many people can stay at a property at one time.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed legislation allowing localities to establish registries for short-term rentals. Loudoun County is one of many areas navigating potential policies for short-term rentals.
