Md. National Guard troops to help in US Virgin Islands for hurricane relief

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced that 100 National Guard troops have been sent to the U.S. Virgin Islands to assist in hurricane relief and recovery efforts.

The troops from the 200th Military Police Company from Catonsville, Maryland, will be deployed for up to 30 days and will be assisting law enforcement and in guarding infrastructure.

Last week, Hogan authorized members of the National Guard’s 729th Quartermaster Composite Supply Company to head to Puerto Rico, where they’ve been working on water purification efforts.

Referring to the recovery efforts in both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hogan said, “These are American citizens that really need our help. A lot of folks were there for us when we were in a time of need, and we just think it’s the right thing to do.”

Hogan told reporters Monday that he knows both governors of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands through their participation in the National Governors Association.
