WASHINGTON — Deandre Harris, the black man who was beaten in a parking garage during a white nationalist rally capturing national attention, has turned himself in to police on an arrest warrant for unlawful wounding.

Harris was beaten Aug. 12 in the Market Street Parking Garage during the violent white nationalist rally and counterprotest.

Court records show the complaint against Harris was filed by Harold Ray Crews, who is identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as chairman of the North Carolina League of States, a white nationalist group.

The charge against Harris alleges that he wounded Crews shortly before Harris was beaten, in the vicinity of the same parking garage.

According to a statement from Charlottesville Police, Harris turned himself in Thursday morning, was served with the warrant for unlawful wounding, was brought before a magistrate, and released on an unsecured bond.

Court records indicate that Harris, 20, of Suffolk, will make an appearance Friday morning in Charlottesville District Court.
