WASHINGTON — The son of a former University of Maryland football coach has died following a shooting in Howard County on Sunday night.

At approximately 10:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a man suffering a gunshot wound in the 5500 block of Harpers Farm Road.

There, they found Meiko Anthony Locksley, 25, of Grand Banks Road in Columbia. He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Meiko is the son of former U.Md. coach and one-time player Mike Locksley. He played football for New Mexico in 2011, where his father served briefly as head coach before being fired.

The elder Locksley was assistant coach at U.Md. on two separate occasions. He served as interim coach in 2015.

He was also a running back at the school.

According to Howard County police, they received multiple calls about a single gunshot in the neighborhood. A nearby resident located Locksley and called 911.

Authorities do not have any additional information about a suspect or motive.
