WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) — A sanitation official says a Virginia dairy is regularly violating pollution limits in its wastewater.

Mike Newlin with the Frederick County Sanitation Authority tells The Winchester Star that the HP Hood manufacturing facility outside Winchester has regularly exceeded its pollution limits in recent years. In fact, since December 2014, Newlin said there has been only one month in which Hood failed to commit a violation.

A spokesperson for the Lynnfield, Massachusetts-based dairy says the company is aware of the issue and working with the county on a solution.

Newlin said the wastewater from Hood regularly taxes the county’s treatment facility. Sometimes it requires the county to spend more on treatment. On other occasions the treatment facility is overwhelmed and ends up discharging polluted water into Opequan Creek.
