WASHINGTON — Severe thunderstorms blew through the D.C. area Monday afternoon, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado with winds reaching 70 mph hit Montgomery County, Maryland, just before 4 p.m. Monday.

The tornado, which hit the Northwood Park neighborhood of Silver Spring, left damage to homes, trees and power lines. The National Weather Service rated the storm at EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, and said it lasted about a minute.

One home was completely totaled, Pete Pringer, the chief spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, told WTOP. He said two residents were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
