Man gets prison time for giving drugs to girlfriend who died

HENRICO, Va. (AP) — A man who gave heroin to his hospitalized girlfriend before her overdose death is going to prison.

Zachary Schwartz was convicted of providing heroin to his girlfriend Meagan Adams, who died last year. Schwartz told police he brought Adams the heroin she used in the bathroom at the Virginia hospital where she was being treated days before she died.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Schwartz will serve two years. The judge said he could serve under a work-release agreement if he meets its requirements.

Schwartz’s attorney said at his sentencing that the man was trying to help her cope with pain from mitochondrial disease. Schwartz said he regretted providing the drugs. He said he felt like if he hadn’t done it, she would’ve gotten them from someone else.
