Washington – The election season is about to get underway in Virginia — absentee voting for the commonwealth’s June 13 primary elections begins Friday.

Voters will be able to consider Democratic and Republican candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, as well as some local lawmaker seats. Virginia voters don’t register by party, so are eligible to vote in either primary.

Residents who would like to vote absentee have to apply,  and meet one of approximately 20 conditions set by the Virginia Department of Elections.

Starting Friday, April 28, voters can apply in-person, at their local voter registrar’s office. After completing the application, approved voters will be allowed to vote in-person using a voting machine in the registrar’s office.

In addition, voters can apply to vote absentee online, by mail, fax, or email.

Some first-time voters are not eligible to vote absentee, according to the Department of Elections.

Regardless of how they are cast, absentee votes won’t be counted until Election Day.

Virginia’s general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7.
