Dunbar HS evacuated briefly due to fuel fumes

WASHINGTON — A D.C. school was evacuated briefly Thursday morning because of strong fuel fumes coming from a nearby construction site.

The fumes reached Dunbar High School, at the corner of 1st and N streets NW, as crews removed several old tanks from the construction site about a block away. Fuel had soaked into the dirt surrounding the tanks and the digging released the fumes as the soil was disturbed, said D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo.

One person was taken to the hospital for observation. The school was evacuated as a precaution and students quickly returned inside to resume classes.
