Metro postpones planned downtown weekend shutdown

WASHINGTON — Metro has revised its track work plans for this weekend to cancel a major planned shutdown of the Blue, Orange and Silver Line tracks downtown.

Instead of a shutdown Saturday and Sunday between Foggy Bottom and Federal Triangle for ceiling tile replacement, trains will instead single-track only after 8 p.m. between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations for work on communication cables. During that single-tracking, Silver Line trains will only run between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston, so riders between those stations and other parts of the region will need to transfer to or from an Orange Line train.

The postponed weekend shutdown is now instead listed on Metro’s long-term track work schedule the following weekend, Sat. Apr. 30 and Sun. May 1.

Other track work is still scheduled this weekend on the Red and Green lines. The Green Line work includes the ongoing 24/7 closure of the Greenbelt and College Park stations and a Sunday morning emergency response drill at Navy Yard that will lead to single-tracking in that area until about 2 p.m. Yellow Line trains are only scheduled to run between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square this weekend rather than their usual service to and from Fort Totten.

Coolest cars for summer: SUVs

While convertibles are the stars of summer, SUVs are the workhorses. Their tasks are endless, from trips to the beach to Home Depot or to socially-distanced gatherings. It’s hard to shake up the jam-packed SUV market, but Hyundai managed to do so with the Palisade, as an extreme value play. It seats up to eight, can be equipped with almost every luxury touch and competes with SUVs costing thousands (or tens of thousands) more.
