WASHINGTON — A Metro car pulling out of a repair shop derailed Monday afternoon at the Alexandria Rail Yard after workers forgot to remove a block meant to keep the car safely in place during maintenance.

The car rolled up over the block around 2:15 p.m., and a set of wheels came off the track, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said.

No one was hurt, and the damage was relatively minor, he said.

Railcars are brought into maintenance shops in pairs, but the other car remained on the tracks, Stessel said.

That rail yard track will remain out of service until the car is put back on the rails and any damage repaired. But other tracks at the shop remain in service, Stessel said.
