WASHINGTON — Sweeping new immigration guidelines announced by the Trump administration Tuesday aim speed up deportations for immigrants apprehended at the border, boost the number of border patrol agents and punish immigrants who pay smugglers to bring their children across the border.

The new guidelines were announced by the Department of Homeland Security Tuesday morning.

The new policies allow for the hiring of 10,000 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees and 5,000 more border patrol agents.

Under the new guidelines, parents could face prosecution if they are found to have paid smugglers to bring their children across the border.

However, the Trump administration is expected to keep the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” program, begun under President Barack Obama, which provided work permits to 750,000 immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children.
