WASHINGTON — The dog D.C. firefighters rescued from a house fire Monday has died.

D.C. Fire/EMS said Tuesday that Cesare, a Maremma breed, died after he was rescued from a fire in the 4500 block of Klingle Street in Northwest.

Fire crews resuscitated Cesare at the scene after he was exposed to a lot of heavy smoke in a short time. The family dog was transported to Friendship Hospital for Animals in Tenleytown. After initially promising signs for recovery, he succumbed to his injuries, D.C. Fire/EMS said.

“Our deepest condolences to his owners,” the agency tweeted.

No one else was injured in the fire, which is still under investigation.
