WASHINGTON — Scheduling a spring break vacation for the family may soon become a bit harder for parents of public school students in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Smith has proposed a schedule change for the 2017-18 school year that would designate two days of the break as winter weather make-up days.

The changes are part of Smith’s draft schedule, which he is expected to present to the county’s school board on Tuesday. The superintendent said the move follows an executive order from Gov. Larry Hogan to have schools start the day after Labor Day.

Spring break in Montgomery County begins on March 26 and ends on April 2 for the 2017-18 school year. The proposal would designate the first two days of the break as the snow day make-ups. The remaining five designated make-up days would be tacked onto the end of the school year, which ends June 15, 2018.

“If the Board adopts my recommended calendar, we will need to clearly communicate with families and staff the expectation that March 26 and March 27 may be used as instructional days,” Smith said in the letter to the county school board.

Smith said the schedule for future years may get a bit more complicated; Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fall on weekdays during the 2018-19 school year.
